Regional and European Integration

The Government Program for 2008-2009 of the Government of Kosovo outlines its willingness to work towards fulfilling the conditions to join the EU. However, the EC progress reports continue to be very critical of the actions taken toward fulfilling those conditions.

Kosovo remains a black whole in the Balkans in terms of integration with EU. It is the only country in the region which does not have contractual relations with the EU. The visa liberalization process that is taking place with Kosovo's neighboring countries, is seen to further add to the isolation of Kosovo.

Further, Kosovo's road to the EU has more obstacles than those of its neighbors. The key challenge is the lack of recognition of Kosovo by five EU members. This coupled with the fact that the integration process itself can be very long, mean that Kosovo's integration with the EU is going to be a very slow and painful process.
