Education
The current education system is seen as inefficient and not in line with the modern educational trends. The University of Prishtina was the sole provider of higher education since its establishment in 1970. Private institutions of higher education were first opened in 2001 in Kosovo. However, there is a perceived drop of quality in higher education since the proliferation of such private institutions. Kosovo's policymakers have struggled to improve the quality of education in Kosovo, and so far there have been no tangible results.
Some facts on education:
Number of pupils in primary school: 326,111 (2007/2008 school year, SOK)
Number of high school students: 90,207 (2007/2008 school year, SOK)
Number of university students: 54,772, out of these 25,840 in the University of Prishtina (figures for 2008), 18,922 in the private universities (figures for 2008) and over 10,000 in the "University in Prishtina" based in Mitrovica (approximation, SOK, IASGAP, "UuP").
