Transparency and Accountability
Many CSO’s and international organizations have raised their concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability in public institutions. Many important decisions are taken without proper public discussions.
During this last ten years transparency and accountability in public institutions have shown very little improvement. Laws have been approved from the parliament of Kosovo to strengthen these two very important components of democracy. But unfortunately the implementations of these laws has not been very successful.
Research conducted by local NGO's confirms that the weakest point in the government, both local and central is transparency for public founds and the way they are managed and spent (YIHR).
Accountability, also, is one of the biggest problems in the political life of Kosovo. Political leaders don’t always feel obliged to justify properly decisions that they take.
We have seen expressions of political will to increase transparency and fight corruption, yet, it remains to be seen if the rhetoric will be followed by actions on the part of government and other responsible institutions.
